The Buddy System

As I read this article I couldn’t stop wondering if these people understood the consequences of “hooking up”. Weren’t they afraid of an unplanned pregnancy or aware of the fact that they can very easily contract an STD through oral sex? I couldn’t believe that they thought that just because it’s oral sex they are safe from those consequences. It was mentioned that hooking up is the norm and it’s perfectly acceptable, I seriously doubt that, it may be accepted with the people they interviewed but I know it wasn’t acceptable when I was in high school, which was around the same time the article was written. I remember the rumors going around about the girls that were “easy”. Those girls were shunned by the other students. I also remember the people who were coupled up. Those people weren’t usually made fun of for being sexually active, so I know hooking up wasn’t something that was acceptable at my high school. I’m sure it’s a problem in some places but it seems these people aren’t very well educated on the consequences of sexual activity.

  1. I know what you mean. It was like that when I went to school. Your last statement is what's really depressing. Most schools in the country do some sort of sex ed classes, and still people think, "It won't happen to me!" Next thing you know, another pregnant 16 year old, or another 21 year old doomed to a fate coupled with HIV.

Can you blame them though? Sex is so glamorized these days. I wonder if people really think it's just like the movies....

  2. I agree that teenagers these days have no idea what their getting themselves into.I know when I started high school that "hooking up" was not the norm.We were more aware of the consequences. I think the Sex Ed classes need to be more imformative. These younger teenagers need to know that oral sex is as dangerous as intercourse.

  3. When i first read the article i wondered too if these people new the potential consequences of their actions. The article states that this is the most educated generation on these matters, more educated than those that came before them. Most of the individuals interviewed were either students at or planning on attending some big name universities, most of them are set to attend Ivy league schools. This leads me to believe they have had the sex education classes and are aware of the harms that could happen to them. But only a small part of our education comes from a textbook and a classroom setting. We are always learning. These kids may be learning from their parents, TV,internet and their friends. The kids spend more time with and are more influenced by their peers than anything else. Having a one hour class for one quarter of school over the course of 18 years is not going to change the behavior of these kids, though i do believe it is beneficial. The intervention would have to start before the class and continue after the class. It would have to occur on a whole different level, and even then it make not work out for everybody. Sometimes experience is the best educator.

  4. I think Ashley hit it right on the head. Not seriously thinking of the consequences of practicing safe sex and thinking oral sex is a grade up with no consequences is crazy. The high school you went to seemed pretty normal and the people who attended were on the right track, all but a few bad apples, but as you stated and I know that it is being practiced widely in inner city schools with a much larger population.
